UT Longhorns or UT Thugs?

The 11th football player had been arrested in Texas. While the coach talks about the proud history of the football program, you have to wonder what type of recruiting program he is running. Not only is this embarrassing for the team but every student who attends and every parent paying tuition.

The following is a statement by UT President William Powers Jr. on Brown's actions following the arrest of Henry:

"I applaud Coach Mack Brown for taking swift action in disciplining a member of his football team. I strongly endorse the penalties he has imposed on this player and others who have been arrested for various offenses. I know Coach Brown feels accountable for the conduct of his team and that these players must be held accountable for their own behavior on and off the field.

It is important for these young men to understand that with the celebrity that comes with being part of the football program, comes an inherent responsibility. When they get involved in criminal behavior or act inappropriately, they embarrass themselves, their teammates and respected former players who have built the tradition of Texas football, their coaching staff and their university.

Their responsibility is to conduct themselves in a manner that demonstrates they understand the impact they have on their team and their community. They must commit themselves to the highest standards of conduct. Playing football at The University of Texas at Austin is an honor and a privilege. On the playing field, and off, these athletes represent one of the greatest universities in the world, its faculty, staff and fellow students. They must take that responsibility to heart."

Maybe they need to start back worrying about academics instead of trophies at UT.

Another UT Football Player Arrested

Another University of Texas football player is in trouble with the law. Sophomore running back James Henry, 19, was arrested at 4 p.m. Monday.

Henry is in jail on two charges: obstruction or retaliation and tampering or fabricating physical evidence. Both offenses are third-degree felonies.

Henry is the 11th UT player, or former player, arrested since the national championship in January 2006.

"We are very disappointed to hear about the recent allegations against James Henry regarding an incident that occurred this past summer. It's unfortunate that we have just been informed of the situation or we would have been able to address it when it allegedly occurred in July. We've talked with James and his family and have decided to suspend him indefinitely. He will not be involved in any team functions at this time, pending the completion of the legal process."
